Hello Quectel Support,

I am using a Quectel RM500U-EA installed in a ZBT-Z8102AX-2SIM router running a custom OpenWrt firmware.

Modem information:

  • Model: Quectel RM500U-EA
  • Current firmware: RM500UEAAAR03A13M2G_01.300.01.300
  • Router: ZBT-Z8102AX-2SIM
  • Platform: MediaTek MT7981 / ARM64
  • OpenWrt: 21.02-SNAPSHOT
  • Router build: 25.1118_204421
  • Mobile operator: Very Mobile / WINDTRE Italy (MCC/MNC 22288)

I am experiencing poor and inconsistent performance, especially when using 5G NSA.

I performed several tests directly through AT commands.

In automatic mode, the modem often stays on LTE Carrier Aggregation, for example:

LTE B20 (PCC) + B1 (SCC) + B3 (SCC)

while the NR carrier is not active:

+QENG: "NR5G-NSA",0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0

AT+QCAINFO also shows the LTE CA carriers but an empty NR carrier.

When LTE B20 is excluded, the modem can establish a real NSA connection using:

LTE B1 + NR n28

For example:

+QENG: "NR5G-NSA",222,88,404,-89,10,-5,152690,28,0,B0F6,0

and:

+QCAINFO: "SCC",152690,10,"NR N28",2,404,-89,-5,-71,10

However, performance with 5G NSA is poor. A representative speed test with B1+n28 was approximately:

  • Download: 17.5 Mbps
  • Upload: 1.7 Mbps
  • Ping: 400 ms

By comparison, forcing LTE-only and allowing B1/B3/B7 (with the modem actually aggregating B1 and B3) produced substantially better download performance, approximately 27–36 Mbps, although latency and upload remain variable.

I also tested 5G SA:

AT+QNWPREFCFG="mode_pref"
+QNWPREFCFG: "mode_pref",NR5G

but:

AT+C5GREG?
+C5GREG: 0,0

so the modem did not register on 5G SA at this location.

EN-DC reports:

AT+QENDC
+QENDC: 1,1,1,0

The modem works and Carrier Aggregation is operational, but 5G NSA attachment/performance appears inconsistent and significantly worse than LTE-only in my tests.

Could you please confirm whether a newer stable firmware is available for RM500UEAAAR03A13M2G_01.300.01.300?

If available, could you please provide:

  1. The latest compatible RM500U-EA firmware package
  2. The recommended upgrade tool/method for Linux/OpenWrt ARM64
  3. Upgrade instructions
  4. Information about any firmware changes related to 5G NSA/EN-DC, Carrier Aggregation, NCM/USB networking, network registration or stability

I would also appreciate confirmation that the suggested firmware is fully compatible with my current branch RM500UEAAAR03A13M2G before flashing.

I can provide additional AT command logs if required.
