Carrier aggregation not getting all bands RM520N-GL

Some people are fine with 500Mbps and they are happy if they can get such speed with a cheap pcie module. Not sure how much you can get, but I think enough to buy something decent.

If I only think it has the hardware for 5X CA…

I suppose the ones that comes bundled with the adapter. I’m not sure they are enough for my tower. Although is visible, is still at nearly 2 km. Do you have something to recommend? Something cheaper than expensive brands like Poynting, Kaser etc. I often hear the term “signal booster”, but I’m not sure how is different from regular antennas.

This one?
It has pcie 4 and gen2 usb which to me seems useless (even pcie 3 and gen1 are much more than a tower can provide in the best of conditions).
Not sure if there is a suitable adapter. I can’t find anything about the supported combos. What differences I can expect in a tower like mine? It’s a bit more than a RM520N-EU, so it may be worth to be taken in consideration, but I can’t find any source talking about it.

So is there any official explanation ,why GL is able to agregate in total 3 bands , while EU don’t have such limits ?
It is silly , when in my country still LTE is leadning , and on tower there is 5 or 6 bands , but GL versions agregate only 3 …

I there a possiblility to change from GL to EU ?( with firmware ?)

HW is different, you can’t change the versions with firmware change. The best Quectel device which I’ve got so far and works perfectly in my project is EU version as I am in Middle east.

Hardware for what ? Snapdragon X62 is the same…

Bro @jfrog please explain the difference to our friend

You’re indeed right, all it takes it a firmware configuration but quectel are intentionally doing this for marketing purposes. The GL versions of all their modems are more optimized for the US market. They want you to go and buy a new module when you move to a different place.

It does not depend ONLY on the Snapdragon X62 modem but what radio tuners you have in front of it. By radio tuner I mean not just the tuner chip but amplifier, filter etc on the signal path from the antenna to the modem. Both the X62 and X65 support up to 2 radio tuners and it’s up to the modem manufacturer to either use one or 2 radios in front of it. I have not unlidded the the RM520 models but my theory is that the GL model has 1 radio tuner and EU model has 2. Or they both have 2 tuners with different channel specifications. As such, no firmware modification will enable the EU channel combos on GL model.

The EU model is the only modem I have seen that can do 1-3-7-20-28 combo. Usually the radio tuner chips can do 20 OR 28 and you need 2 tuner chips to get both these channels.

This is just my thought based on experience with multiple modem models of multiple manufacturers, I am not an employee of Quactel.

Having on tower bands : B1 , B3 ,B7 , B8 , B20 and n78 (NSA) with RM520N-GL i can do any combination of them , and maximum what can be achieved is PCC+SCC0+SCC1 , with n78 this one is always SCC1 , any LTE band can be PCC or SCC0…
But non SCC2

Is all GL having same issue ? RM551E-GL will also agregate 3 bands ?

RM-530 is only in GL ? Not EU ? So how many bands can agregate it ?

@silvia Can you please share ENDC document for RM520N-EU? Need to check if it can aggregate 2x 5G NSA like n41+n78

May be this could help?

In general, GL variants are designed for worldwide band coverage in exchange for worse CA combo. Regional variants have band coverage that is tuned for designed region and support more CA combinations. If your use case does not involve travel but instead want to use it in stationary device in single region, you should always go for regional variant if available.

@meloserj : Hello, I have bought the RM520N-Eu module and replace the RM520N-GL module in my GL-X3000 router but now I’m only getting LTE bands (when trying to force NR5G it refuses to connect). Do you have an “how to steb-by-step” for a proper flashing firmware method ? Thanks.

Sorry mate, I never used my module in router. I used the mcuzone conversion board for my module and just updated the firmware of module
