RM550V-GL Firmware?

Hello there!

I have an RM550V-GL and an RM551E-GL

The RM550V-GL is running firmware:
RM550VGL01AAR01A02G8G_01.001.01.001
(2024-06-06)

The RM551E-GL is running firmware:
RM551EGL00AAR01A02M8G_01.001.01.001
(2024-12-23)

On the RM551E-GL PCIe RC mode (AT+QCFG=“PCIe/mode”,1) has worked since firmware:
RM551EGL00AAR01A01M8G_BETA_20240624A_01.001.01.001

On the RM550V-GL PCIe RC mode can be enabled but it does not work.

Is there any newer firmware for the RM550V-GL than 2024-06-06 ?

Its strange because originally the plan was for development to happen with RM550V before the RM551E. Yet we have had 4 firmware versions for the 551 and it seems only 1 for the 550.

Well I went ahead and flashed the RM550V-GL with RM551E-GL firmware using QFIL

ATI shows it as an RM551 now but I got CFUN 7 initially.

I attempted to restore a qcn from my 551 to the 550 and after reboot the AT port wouldn’t respond.

I went back to QFIL and did an erase all and got AT communication back , but now I get CFUN 5

Restoring the QCN from my 551 gives the same result and I suspect restoring a 550 QCN would give CFUN 7 again but I have not tried that yet.

Dear @iamromulan
They are different project, you can’t flash 551 firmware to 550.
Before upgrade, do you restore QCN from 550?

Hey King. I have a tray of these and they have been nothing but pure pain. There is a firmware posted to the customer support portal about 3 months ago and it doesn’t perform much better.

I haven’t been able to pass a byte from the module to another device since Quectel shipped them.

PM me if you would :+1:

After upgrade I restored QCN from 551 to 550
That’s when I lost AT commands.
I did a full wipe flash (Qfirehose -e) to remove the QCN and I got AT commands back.

Yes I know 550 and 551 are different projects, but, the only real difference between their software/firmware is the radio. The system and the kernel are pretty much the same. They are both SDXPINN.

Maybe I could try flashing only sysfs and boot from 551?

QFIL allows me to skip firmware verification.

AT+QCFG=“PCIe/mode”,1 is working on the 551
My goal was to try to make that happen on the 550 as well.

Dear @iamromulan
Even they are similar project, but the firmware can’t mix up.
You should restore the QCN from 550.

@silvia
I need to obtain a QCN from someone else’s 550. I forgot to make a backup when I was experimenting.

I think maybe I could just flash boot.img, sysfs.ubi, usrdata.ubi, and recoveryfs.ubi from the 551. Something to experiment with when I obtain the QCN I need.

I know of people who were successful flashing the Fibocom FM190-GL with RM551E-GL firmware. They are pretty much the same hardware, both x75 SDXPINN.

We really need a new firmware revision here. Data transmission between the radio module and end user devices is all sorts of wacky.

Meanwhile we get a new 551 firmware that’s a dumpster fire

Dear @iamromulan
As you know, if restore the QCN from us, the performance will be worse than before.
If accept, please share IMEI of your RM550V. I will check.

Dear @belusnecropolis
Please share your current firmware.

Firmware revision is RM550VGL01ABR01A02M4G_01.001.01.001

Dear @belusnecropolis
RM550VGL01ABR01A02M4G_01.001.01.001 is the latest one.

I know, that is the problem. This module is nearly unusable without a new version.

Still waiting for a functioning firmware. Purchased from Quectel December and they are collecting dust. Unable to test.

Great news! I was able to obtain an xqcn, and restored CFUN 1.

I was successful at combining firmware by utilizing the NON-HLOS.ubi from the current RM550V-GLAA firmware with everything else from the RM551E-GLAA firmware dated Aug 5th, 2024.

Seems like everything is stable and working so far for me. No xqcn needed.

I have not tested:

  • NDIS/QMI
  • MBIM
  • RNDIS

Confirmed working:

  • Ethernet via PCIe RC mode is working AT+QCFG="pcie/mode",1
  • QMAP commands
  • ECM
  • Seems stable, no reboots

PM me if you need it
