I have bought an RM520N-GL with my Lenovo X1 Carbon G12 laptop. Running arch-linux based distro (manjaro) with kernel 6.12 and modem-manager 1.23.4-2.
I’ve downloaded and run the lenovo fcc unlock utility and I still have no success in operating this poorly documented card.
What I have managed to observe so far:
- With mmcli I usually get signal 0% and I have no idea how to get out of this or why the device isn’t getting good reception
- I must call “sudo mbimcli -p -d /dev/wwan0mbim0 --quectel-set-radio-state=on” to turn on the radio in the first place, as modemmanager complains that the transitions are not valid.
- I cannot register with the mobile provider but I guess this has to do with the signal being 0% mostly
- I’ve installed the QFirmwareSwitch and QConnectManager, however, both of those are so poorly documented that it is not clear how to use them and for which purpose. About the firmware switcher, it isn’t clear where to download the firmware from, there’s no help section when running the binary and so it is literally impossible to figure out what to do next.
- There is no way to access the device through minicom or screen, as no traditional serial interfaces are exposed through the kernel. I have just very recently realized I can hack my way into it through mbimcli which provides a way to execute singular AT commands specifically for Quectel. Hurray, I just have no idea which command to execute.
On a personal note, I must say that this website has been the poorest support experience I’ve had in years and I will never buy any of your products again. It is impossible to understand which software to use, there’s very poor documentation and the worst part is that you’re asking people for their emails so that you could individually send them firmwares and files, this is the most inefficient way of communicating I’ve seen in years.
