Quectel RM500U-EA Vodafone New Zealand No Service

Hi Forum!

Hardware:

Quectel RM500U-EA

(in a ZBTlink ZBT-Z8105AX)

Problem:

After Reboot sometimes a Cell Tower and a Signal% are reported but ‘No Service’.

Then No Service and No Cell tower and No Signal either permanently.

And I never get an Internet connection.

Parameters:

Location: New Zealand

Provider: Vodafone

The SIM card is taken from my old 4G modem/router and is working (verified back and forth).

Service available:

  • 4G - 700MHz (Band 28)
  • 4G - 1800MHz (Band 3)
  • 4G - 2100MHz (Band 1)
  • 4G - 2600MHz (Band 7)
  • 5G Band N7 (NR 2600MHz)
  • 5G Band 78 (NR 3500MHz)-NSA

Diagnostic is hard because of the constant interference of the active shell scripts.

Question: I need a reliable way to diagnose the module.

I can’t find anything in the FAQs besides

Debug level output with

AT+QCFG=“dbgctl”,0

which seems to be ignored/has no effect?

Also a more recent firmware may help?

Thanks in Advance.

Dear @NZ_user
The module is in ZBT, we don’t know the logic in it.
Please contact ZBT manufacture to support.

Dear @silvia

So let ME worry about the OpenWRT side of the router. Please answer the following two questions:

Is there a newer firmware version for the
Quectel
RM500U-EA
Revision: RM500UEAAAR03A13M2G
PLEASE stop ignoring my requests and send it to me together with the instructions/tools to apply it!

And PLEASE give me the AT commands to connect to VODAFONE NEW ZEALAND at

  • 4G - 700MHz (Band 28)
  • 4G - 1800MHz (Band 3)
  • 4G - 2100MHz (Band 1)
  • 4G - 2600MHz (Band 7)
  • 5G Band N7 (NR 2600MHz)
  • 5G Band 78 (NR 3500MHz)-NSA

Dear @NZ_user
We have the version of RM500U, but your device is ZBT, we don’t know how to upgrade in it.

Dear @silvia
If you tell me about it I can help you.
It is basically a Linux shell environment. So if you have a flash tool for that? I can only guess because you don’t give any information…

Dear @NZ_user
I can share the tool and firmware version.
But I don’t know if there is any limitations and risk on your device. Do you accept any unexpected risk?
If yes, I will share to you.

Dear @silvia

Yes I accept the risk. Thank you for helping me.

Dear @NZ_user
I have sent to your email, please check.

Dear @silvia

Thank you for the firmware.
Although I have trouble to determine if the version supplied is really newer than the one installed:

The document RM500U-EA-AA_Firmware_Release_Notes_V0313_01.302.01.302 claims to contain
Firmware RM500UEAAAR03A13M2G 01.302.01.302

The modem says it already has Quectel RM500U-EA
Revision: RM500UEAAAR03A13M2G

The update version file says

[udx710_module+initgc+console+sec-user-native_FDDNRSEC_21A]
PAC_Time=2026-03-10-Tue:15:38
AP=udx710-module+unisoc-initgc-1.0+W26.11.2:15.03.32+user+native
CP0=5G_MODEM_21A_W23.38.3_P36|udx710_modem|02-04-2026 18:49:35
CP2=
firmware=
gnss_version=
Product=udx710_module+initgc+console+sec
gms_version=

All of that is not helpful or indicates to be the SAME version as installed.
Am I correct?

Also I am still waiting for the initialisation sequence of AT commmands I requested.

Regards from New Zealand

Dear @NZ_user
Please share the response of AT comands as below, they can check whether it registered in newtork.

Dear @NZ_user
From the log, it is searching network.
Do you confirm the SIM card work with other device? Or change other SIM?
Is it correct APN? Currently, it is vodafone.

If still fail, it is better to contact ZBT.
