MC60E Module and Recommendded Antennas Specification inquiry

I have inquiries about the antenna requirements of MC60E and PCB layout:

  1. Why the recommended power of the GSM antenna is 50W ?

the standard power for mobile devices is about 2W

  1. The recommended VSWR of the antenna is <=2,

While chip antennas I found are within 3~5 will that work?

  1. The markings under the module refer to keep-out area, does that mean all the area of the module or only where the markings are located?

Hi Mgeek,

  1. GSM’s 2W is a protocol-driven transmit power cap (system-level constraint), and Antenna’s 50W is a hardware safety limit (engineering safeguard).
    For a 12.5% duty cycle (typical for GSM) :Peak power = Average power / Duty cycle = 2W / 0.125 = 16W.
So we think the 50W antenna is relatively safe.

2.The VSWR can be greater than 2. To determine whether the antenna is available, it is necessary to consider the actual measured antenna efficiency.

3.Usually, we suggest that the area near RF should be keep-out, If the PCB space permits, it is not recommended to route traces on the surface layer below the module, and make sure there is a complete GND plane under the module.
