How to read GPIO from BG96

I want to start into this topic but have a very basic question:
How would I start reading e.g. temp sensor readings with a BG96 module? (only the module, no dev kit) or what would I need to attach? So far I have only handled arduinos doing these things for me. So i could simply attach to the GPIO pins.
