Does SMS (text mode) sent with AT+CMGS use message store?

I am using an EG21G and sending SMS using AT+CMGS. The response is +CMGS: where is described as a message reference, and appears to increment with each message.
My questions are:

  • When sending using AT+CMGS does the message get saved in the message store? If so, do I need to delete it, and does the message reference mean that’s where the message is stored?
    Thanks.

No.

No. It’s an automatically incremented number (maybe rolls over at 255). Your getting it is confirmation of successful sending.

I needed to refresh my memory on this, but it’s possible to use the message reference number from a previously submitted SMS in a follow-up “SMS-command” message to the message centre.

This is intended to take some action in respect of that earlier SMS. For example, ask if it has been delivered.

3GPP 23.040 section 9.2.2.4 is your starting point.
