Hello, I hope it’s ok to post a number of questions about this modem?

  1. I recently updated from the firmware my module was supplied with - RM551EGL00AAR01A01M8G to A04. But R02 is available - is it a good idea to update to this or not?

  2. All the RM551 modules are still ‘engineering samples’ - is there a roadmap or a date for a customer release?

  3. The modem behaves significantly differently between A01 and A04 - specifically, AT commands with one particular SIM - is this expected?

  4. Is it planned to allow MBIM connections to the modem, or will it remain QMI only?

Sorry, I have another question - is it possible to downgrade from A04 to A02 or A01 or does this risk bricking the module?

Quectel doesn’t recommend flashing to R02 if you are on R01 firmware. It can be done but isn’t a straight forward process.

Stability and functionality wise R01A04 is considered to be the best version but you should be fine flashing one of the older versions.

I’ve seen iamromulan’s pages where he shows how to do this. I am puzzled that there is later firmware - presumably more advanced - but Quectel don’t recommend using it? Apart from the hassle to flash it, does A02 work better?

Also - is it safe and straighforward to downgrade from (eg) A04 to A02?

In my opinion, stay away from R02, and A04 is the better choice now. I have R02 now, and it doesn’t seem that good. MBIM is not working keep showing pin code is rejected each time, even with different SIM.

Performance wise, no such a different sometimes less on R02.

RM551E doesn’t support MBIM. You can check RN in firmware package.
There is no roadmap for it.
For different between A01 to A04, you can check RN.
