LG290P altitude limit

I have an LG290P (firmware V0105S) which has an altitude limit of 10 000 meters. I’m using it as a personal location tracker. Typical airliners cruise around 10–12 km, which results in data gaps on my vacations.

Your competitors are setting the limit from 18 km up to 80 km, e.g. u-blox ZED-F9P with an 80 km altitude limit.

Is there a way to increase the altitude limit? Could you update the firmware to go to 12 km? Or even to 18 km or 80 km to match your competitors?

Hi Mag
According to international export control regulations (Wassenaar Arrangement), civil GNSS receivers are subject to the so-called “CoCom limits.” This means that a GNSS receiver must not be capable of operating when both of the following conditions are exceeded:
• Altitude: 60,000 feet (approximately 18,288 meters)
• Velocity: 1,000 knots (approximately 515 m/s)

If a receiver can function beyond these limits, it is classified as military-grade equipment and is subject to strict export restrictions.

And we have another L96 product whose spec supports the height you described. This indicates that the LG290P is most likely supported in terms of hardware, but there might be software restrictions. I will confirm with the internal team later and get back to you.
Best regards

Thanks, looking forward to hearing back from you and the team.

It would be great if you could increase the limits to the CoCom limits of 18 000 meters altitude, or at least to 12 000 meters altitude which are normal for commercial airliners.

Hello mag

We have the latest beta firmware of LG290P, which can meet your requirement. But this version not is formal version, its function need to be tested. When formal version is released, i will send it to you.

I’m impressed - that was quick! :100:

I’m willing to test the beta firmware. Note that I’m not flying for a month, so I won’t be able to give any feedback on the altitude limit until the middle of October.

If I experience any errors, is it possible for me to downgrade the firmware? Or is downgrading blocked?

Hi Mag

I have sent the latest firmware to you through email. Please check it.

Best regards.
