EC25-EUXGR/AFXGA - Random Disconnects, Fails to Re-register

Hello Quectel Support Team and Community,

We are experiencing a persistent issue with our EC25-EUXGR and EC25-AFXGA modems where they disconnect from the network after a random period and then fail to reconnect. We are looking for assistance in diagnosing whether this is a firmware, hardware, or network issue.

Problem Description

The device connects successfully and operates normally for a variable duration (hours or days). Then, the cellular connection drops.ModemManager immediately tries to re-establish the connection, but these attempts fail.

After the failed reconnection attempts, the modem gets stuck in a “searching” state and cannot find the network again. The only reliable fix is a full power cycle of the host device.

A soft reboot does not fix the issue, and actually causes the state to change to ‘sim-missing’. We have tested removing the SIM and placing it on my cellphone and it worked correctly. Anything we try other than power cycling or modem reset doesn’t help. The software modem reset (mmcli -m <> --reset) works most of the time, but can also cause the modem to enter a disabled → enabling → disabled loop. Manually trying to enable gets me an ‘Invalid transition’ error.

System Details

Host Hardware: Seeed Studio ReComputer R1000

Modem Models: Quectel EC25-EUXGR and EC25-AFXGA

Firmware Version: EC25EUXGAR08A13M1G_20.200.20.200

Host System: Custom Debian Bookworm (Linux)

Kernel Version: 6.12.34+rpt-rpi-v8

Software: ModemManager (1.20.4-1) and NetworkManager (1.42.4-1+rpt1+deb12u1)

Driver: qmi_wwan

NetworkManager Configuration

Our connection profile is a standard GSM configuration:

[connection]
type=gsm
autoconnect=true
...
[gsm]
apn=onomondo

[ipv4]
method=auto

[ipv6]
method=auto

We have full ModemManager and NetworkManager debug logs available and can provide them upon request. Our analysis suggests the disconnection is initiated by the network, but the modem’s inability to recover is the primary concern.

Could this behavior be related to a known firmware issue? Are there any specific commands we can run when the modem is in this failed state to gather more diagnostic information?

Thank you for your support.

hi,
There are many factors contributing to this problem. In my opinion, your firmware version is quite outdated. Would it be convenient for you to update the firmware first and then conduct a test?

Thanks

I requested updated firmware on another thread and received the firmware, but I couldn’t find the tool for flashing it to the device, could you provide me a link for it?
The modem is running on a Raspberry pi cm4

hi ,

Please check the private message.

Hi, could you please check if firmware EC25EUXGAR08A17M1G_20.200.20.200 is the latest available for EC25EUXGAR08A17M1G? Thats the file I received on the topic I asked but it seems to be the one already on my modem.

Hi,
This is not the latest firmware. This is the version from 2024. It is also a relatively new version.
Your current version is EC25EUXGAR08A13M1G_20.200.20.200, which is A13, while the version of EC25EUXGAR08A17M1G_20.200.20.200 is A17.
Thanks

In that case, could you provide me the latest firmware?

hi,

The latest version will be sent to you privately as soon as I receive it.
Please check the RN.
